The Big Lamp Roundabout, Shaw

The Big Lamp Roundabout is having a bit of a makeover.  Over the last year Shaw and Crompton Councillors have been working behind the scenes to get some improvement works to happen on the roundabout itself.

“Because the Big Lamp Roundabout is such a prominent location and the entrance to Shaw and Crompton, we wanted to showcase it.  Some minor improvements have already been undertaken – trees cut and some shrubs removed.  The lamp itself, despite the bulb keep having to be replaced, is a bit brighter.  Starting this week, there should be more work happening, including a new sign welcoming people to the town.  Exciting times ahead,” stated Local Shaw Liberal Democrat Councillor Howard Sykes.

Why on earth are you spending our money on something like this when shaw is slowly but surely being closed down? Very soon we will have no services whatsoever except an overpriced petrol station, umpteen takeaways and now a pretty roundabout! It’s hardly condusive to inviting people to shaw, to visit let alone to live!

Thanks for this. Mostly when I give directions to my house from the Oldham end, I always ask ‘do you know the big lamp roundabout?’, and this will definitively be of assistance. Also looks good!

I noticed this the other day. I think it is good that the Parish Council spends some money on the things which make Shaw unique. It will always be known as the Big Lamp Roundabout, so I think it is a good idea to make a solid and long-lasting reminder.

I moved back to High Crompton 18 months ago, after living for 30 years in Rochdale/Whitworth. I am SO glad I did. I had forgotten what a nice place to live Shaw is. Yes, there have been some changes, but in comparison to Oldham and Rochdale, I cannot think of any other way to describe it other than a little oasis of calm between two big Towns. Early this morning, I was absolutely over the moon to see the Christmas lights twinkling on the Big Lamp roundabout tree. Thank you Shaw!

Glad you like them we had the plan to do this for a couple of years but had to wait for others works to be completed and also we could not invest all the cash in the lights in one go. Hopefully the improved display around the War Memorial will also meet with your approval. Thanks for your comments.
