Big Lamp Roundabout – carriageway resurfacing works – additional information

A number of people have asked why the above works were undertaken and the reason why they were done.  I did ask the same questions myself.  This is the information I have been given.

Highway engineers said the works would be done by Friday (this week) I am pleased as I am sure everybody will be that the works did not take as long and finished early.

The reason for the works is that the highway around the Big Lamp Roundabout was in danger of failing and had started to in a number of places.

Due to it strategic place on the local highway network the above put it near the top of the resurfacing list.  It is also difficult to patch which is what happens elsewhere rather than resurfacing.

Appreciate never a good time to do such works however doing them after 7:00pm has much less traffic impact than day time.  Saying that even at this time the traffic was still very bad and caused significant delays for many.   Also a balance between that and 24 hour working (and its impact on local residents and traffic) which would have been another choice.

Hope the above covers most of the points most people have raised with me.

The situation will be the same with High Street next in terms of timings, however on this occasion we have been pressing for this to be re-surfaced rather than repeatedly repaired for some time.  However its place in the road network does also a consideration.

Another puzzling resurface job was the car park opposite Asda. This car park was fine and actually accommodated more cars than it does now.

Has Oldham Council got a secret agenda in so much as it intends to move the Shaw Market there at a later date. The place it wanted it in the first place.

The car park behind the Community Centre was in greater need of resurfacing.

The car park was not fine the surface was poor and the disabled spaces sub standard. We locally wished to do something about the the trees/tree pits and commissioned some work in this regard (some of which will be finished now in October/November – tree planting time) – this resulted in the council then agreeing to resurface it when they had previously refused which is good news and a win.

Regarding the spaces we asked for the larger ones like we have on the former market ground as they have been very successful with shoppers and means you do not get your doors bashed and provide better access for those who need it.

If you mean the former baths car park they have refused work on that to date but we keep trying. Also if that is used along with the former bath site itself for our new health centre, like we are pressing for, will get sorted then.

      Hope this helps.

    Howard,
Could you kindly chase the road repairs for the Jubilee bends reported back in May 2017 please?
Virgin media put a trench across the carriageway opposite no 9 which has sunk considerably.
The road surface is shocking, especially for a major route carrying hundreds of HGV’s every day.

The dropped manhole at the junction of buckstones road and Milnrow road was also reported several months ago yet remains in a dangerous state especially for cyclists and motorcyclists.

Will chase Virgin trench and manhole.

UU have a massive backlog of manhole type repairs I am chasing all over Shaw and Crompton. The one you mention is already on that long list.

The road surface I have repeatedly asked, the reply is: ‘while there is some surface erosion there are currently no plans to do anything about it’. Surface erosion is what they call it when it is a pothole below 40mm and they do not repair them – like on Rochdale Road/Chamber Road for example.

Highways have inspected the defective VM trench today and issued a defect repair to VM including site meeting to discuss and agree repair date.

Also had earlier this week a further acknowledgement about the UU grid at the junction of Milnrow Road and Buckstones Road.
