Your Shaw Councillors have been working closely with volunteer groups to improve Crompton Moor over many years, but are sometimes hindered by anti-social behaviour.
This ranges from people going up to the moor to camp, light fires, use drugs/alcohol. With this in mid, we have been working over the past twelve months to activate new powers to enable Oldham Council and Police to take action when people damage and mis-use the moor.
These new powers are activated using a Public Space Protection Order.
What will the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) do?
Agencies have raised concerns, echoed by the local community regarding the behaviour of some individuals using Crompton Moor who are setting fires, littering, injuring wild life, allowing dogs to run wild and causing damage to plant life. There have also been a number of incidents which are Anti-Social in nature including verbal abuse and threats to legitimate users of the Moor.
Local Councils now have the power to put in place Public Space Protection Orders (PSPO) to help manage such issues and we completed the first round of consultation earlier this year.
Why are we consulting again?
The PSPO then went to a panel at the Council who made a number of small but significant recommendations primarily regarding dogs during the nesting season.
The panel have asked us to consult again as they have recommended we include a clause regarding dogs on leads during the nesting season to protect our nesting birds.
We have also become aware of issues around nitrous oxide usage and psychoactive substances by young people, which have also now been incorporated into the order.
How can you get involved?
You can tell us your views about the order by taking part in the consultation in any of the ways below:
At Crompton Library from Monday 16 October 2017.
On line at:

There will also be volunteers out on the Moor from the Friends of Crompton Moor Group and the Volunteer Countryside Rangers, talking to people about the PSPO, so if you are a moor user – why not keep your eyes open and have a chat if you are approached!
I walk the moor daily and always pick litter up, last year there was repeated overnight camping over the quarry littering and leaving the place a mess. Unless I’ve missed it, doesn’t appear to have happened this year! Also, approached people who drop litter (my pet hate) hoping to prick their conscious which can be confrontational in some instances. In the past, I’ve reported car numbers for disregarding litter from moving vehicles, reported one last week but no followup call from OMBC kind of disappointed…..
We have had campers I am afraid and only recently.
Always interested when active and responsible citizens report matters and ‘nothing’ happens. Happy to follow up if you let me have the details.
I remember Crompton moor being a quiet oasis for those willing to hike up there.
All changed when Oldham council decided to turn the moor into another Tandle hills.
These PSPO’s etc are a total waste of time. We are constantly coming up with new powers but why does nobody realise, without sufficient Policing they are not worth the paper they are written on.
Crompton moor was lost to the thugs 10 years ago.
I think a number of us including me the Friends of the Moor and the volunteer rangers would disagree. PSPO’s do allow action to be taken were it currently cannot be. Police are not the only people who can use these powers.
The vast majority of users respect this space the few thoughtless must not be allowed to spoil it for them.
Walk up there regularly and is beautiful! Notice a large number of dog owners take there dogs and let them run around freely, jumping up at me ? And think most of them take dogs up there to foul so they don’t av to pick it up!
Do make sure you respond to the consultation.
After having a quadruple bypass in 2016 one of the essential things you need to do after such an operation is to walk, and walk i did.
I am fairly new to Crompton Moor as I live in Milnrow and drive here with my trusty dog,I agree that some dog owners do not collect the mess their dogs leave behind, but on the whole most dog owners are very thoughtful of the area and its surroundings.I can honestly say that Crompton Moor in some way has given me my road to recoveryover the past two years, its a lovely place and i thank all those who work behind the scenes to keep this a place of nature and a place for you and i to enjoy.
Thank you all so very much.
Thanks for the post Alan will pass on and share your kind words.
I’ve missed the opportunity to attend the recent consultation for which I am disappointed. I walk the Moore several times a week and have experienced a multitude of problems of late.
In the evenings, cars full of young men turn up frequently to inhale laughing gas and then leave the capsules strewn throughout the car park and wooded areas. Numerous amounts of used condoms strewn throughout the car park on a regular basis.
On two occasions I have seen lads with airguns in the woodland, attempting to shoot birds.
I’ve also cleared numerous disposable BBQ’s from various parts of the site. However the worse if not most concerning issue is the amount of abuse from the cars full of idiots that seem to congregate in the evenings.
It’s only a matter of time before users begin taking measures into their own hands where these anti-social yobs are concerned.
As I say to all please make sure your report any ASB and other issues to the police when you seen them – appreciate not always easy on phoning 101 but helps back me up when they say we have had reports of no incidents and I am arguing for some resources for the area.
