Massive incinerator planned

Plans for a major industrial incinerator on the edge of Shaw, at the Mossdown Industrial Estate beside Metrolink, are to be submitted shortly.  Waste is likely to be brought in through Royton via Broadway and Shaw via Milnrow Road, a likely 18,000 extra HGV journeys a year.

While the site is in Royton, emissions and traffic from this plant will impact on Shaw and Crompton. “We are supporting local groups and will be actively opposing this development,” stated Councillor Howard Sykes.

  1. Hilary Richards says:

I would object strongly to this. Something like this should be on an industrial estate on the edge of a town with good motorway links, not in the middle of a town. The increase of heavy lorries on our roads coupled with the extra cars that would come with 400 houses on the Linney Lane/Beal Lane would bring the surrounding roads to a standstill.

I would urge people to respond and object to the planning application when it goes public assuming it is submitted as planned shortly.

  2. George Cleaver says:

No way should it be built there.

  5. Poulton says:

This should not be built. Terrible idea. Just as greater Manchester want to charge us for driving our vans in a “clean air zone”. There wont be any clean air for miles when this thing is built

  6. Elizabeth Cragg says:

I have looked on planning applications and found nothing, what and where will I find it?

  7. Ian says:

There are 1000s of tonnes of waste buried underneath the planned site.
    Fact

  8. Simon Travis says:

According to a recent Guardian Article most of the incinerators are in the most deprived areas in the country. They omit poisonous fumes and I suspect that people in deprived area are less likely to object to plans to build an incinerator in their area.

  9. Robert kenworthy says:

I totally object to the incinerator project on the grounds that the extra transport Going into Royton and Shaw.
Be assured the volume of traffic and rubbish will increase as time passes.

My biggest objection is that the pollution will be dropped onto higher parts of Shaw, the chimney although high is not higher than the surrounding hills and that will disperse the toxic fumes around the area.

The company putting forward this incinerator has one working near Hull.
This incinerator is located on a low population area and has a flat landscape and any emissions are generally dispersed out over the Humber.
The people of Oldham, Shaw, and Royton have persevered 7 decades of serious pollution and now the air quality is good and we need to plant trees and plants not incinerator plants.

I would demand an air quality check in areas of higher elevation and monitoring system at the earliest opportunity prior to any build and get a environmental impact assessment.

Why does all the bad news seem to gravitate to Shaw? The swimming baths went for no good reason, the doctors has needed replacing for twenty years at least, the Council have ruined what was once a thriving market, again for no good reason and I could go on. I know these plants have to go somewhere but I totally agree with Hilary Richards when she says that something like this should be on an industrial estate on the edge of a town( preferably not this one ). I may be accused of being a NIMBY but I can’t think of one good reason for siting this where proposed and I for one will certainly be opposing the planning permission.

  11. Howard Morton says:

Terrible plan proposing to build an incinerator within a 5-mile reach from the nearest motorway? There are designated industrial areas close to motorways better suited for this, once built the traffic to this plant will increase massively. We have schools close to this route making this a very dangerous plan the best proposal would be planning to reduce traffic and pollution not increasing it!

Councillor Sykes, Please give us names and contact details of the people we should lobby to get this project halted before it gets too late.

Then you need to lobby councillors on the planning committee.

  13. Chris Broadbent says:

Howard Chris and Hazel, many people will not be aware of this until it is too late because they don’t recieve your e mails or haven’t seen the Focus for a while. Door to door leaflets required. Will we never be rid of lorries trundling along our narrow roads? As well as the pollution they cause, they are bringing more with them. Wouldn’t want my children to go to school near there.

    • howardsykes says:

I am sure we will as will other interested in campaigning against this. Need a planning application to be submitted first.

  14. Debra says:

I strongly disagree with this planned incinerator scheme, we are supposed to be looking to help reduce climate change, not add to it. There are too many residents in the area, schools, old people’s homes, hospital, not to mention all the pollution people will be breathing in constantly., plus the stink, there are plenty of houses nearby and roads are busy enough without all this extra traffic day and night. There must be a greener way, I’m sure Oldham council do not need to make the Oldham area anymore less desirable to live in, from a very angry Royton resident ?

  15. Lisa says:

This is absolutely shocking and should not be built in the Oldham area full stop. We need to be making Oldham more appealing, this will definitely impact people wanting to buy houses and will devalue house prices in one of the few areas that still has some appeal in Oldham.
Oldham council are not going to be happy until there is nothing left of any value in Oldham, they are destroying this town and unfortunately we continue to vote them in. This surely will have massive health implications for our children and for the environment, every resident in Oldham needs to object to this . I’m sure the council will have received some payment to put this in Oldham, shame none of them live next to it!! From another furious royton resident ??

Will you announce when the planning goes in?
