80 years since victory in Europe and victory over Japan:  Sykes writes to Council bosses calling for “considered and thoughtful” commemorations

Oldham Liberal Democrat Opposition Leader councillor Howard Sykes MBE has written to Oldham Council’s top leadership asking them to detail the Council’s official plans to mark the 80th anniversaries of the end of the second world war.

In his letter councillor Sykes said “The second world war had a profound impact on every aspect of British life and its consequences shaped the world we live in today.  Now more than ever it important that we are considered and thoughtful when we come together to think about the legacy of conflict.”

Sykes has asked the Leader of the Council and her Chief Executive Officer to set out which the series of events that the Council will be supporting and provide information on how residents can get involved.

Councillor Sykes said, “This is a very important year and we need to put on a show to honour all those from Oldham Borough who fought in the war and also keep their stories alive for another generation.  Lots of us will be keen to play our part in that.  So, I’m looking forward to hearing back soon.”

Councillor Arooj Shah
Leader of Oldham Council

Shelley Kipling
Acting Chief Executive Officer

Dear Councillor Shah and Ms Kipling,

RE: 80th anniversary of V-E Day celebrations and V-J Day

I am writing to inquire about the plans that Oldham Council has in place to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE and VJ Day this year.

As a Borough, it is important to reflect on the historic significance of these days, particularly considering its relevance to both the veterans and their families; as well as the wider public.  The second world war had a profound impact on every aspect of British life and its consequences shaped the world we live in today.  Now more than ever it important that we are considered and thoughtful when we come together to think about the legacy of conflict.

I am keen to learn more about any events, initiatives, or commemorative activities that may be organised to honour these milestones.

Could you please provide some insight into the Council’s plans for this important occasion, as well as any opportunities for local residents and councillors to get involved?

Thank you very much for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Councillor Howard Sykes MBE
