Success for Metrolink overnight parking trial

A successful trial scheme to offer overnight weekend parking at selected Metrolink stops will now be made permanent.

In December last year, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) launched a trial offering Metrolink customers free overnight parking on Friday and Saturday nights at 15 tram stops, with a pick up time of 12pm the following day.

Local Shaw Liberal Democrat Councillor Howard Sykes, who is a member of Transport for Greater Manchester Committee (TfGMC), welcomed the news as it is something he has been campaigning for since Metrolink first came to Shaw and Crompton.

This Friday’s meeting of the TfGM Committee (10 June) will hear that the pilot scheme has been a success, with no capacity issues affecting regular daytime commuters.

The report recommends that overnight parking during the week is not introduced, as major events such as concerts and football matches would affect Metrolink commuters the following day.

A permanent overnight parking scheme would cover the 15 Metrolink Park and Ride trial sites including: Shaw and Crompton (90), Derker (251), Oldham Mumps (270), and Hollinwood (190) stops.

Planned industrial action affecting First Manchester bus services in Shaw, Oldham, Rochdale and elsewhere Tuesday 24 May

firstbusconsult

Bus passengers are advised that planned industrial action could affect First Manchester services in some areas of Greater Manchester on Tuesday 24 May.

Discussions between First’s management and the union Unite are ongoing but if a resolution is not reached, services in Oldham, Salford, Rochdale and Middleton and parts of North Manchester will be affected.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) have worked with First and other operators to ensure that dedicated school services, which are supported by TfGM, are able to run as a matter of priority.

Those whose journey could be affected should check before travelling on Tuesday to find out the latest information.”

If industrial action goes ahead the free city centre Metroshuttle services will not run on Tuesday 24 May.

Information will be posted at bus stops in affected areas and additional staff will be on hand at key interchanges to advise passengers.

Warm Welcome for Electric Buses

Volvo-Electric-Bus-Gothenburg

The Leader of the Opposition and of the Liberal Democrat Group on Oldham Council, Councillor Howard Sykes MBE, has welcomed the announcement earlier this week that officials from Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) have met with the Volvo Bus Corporation to discuss proposals to replace the current bus fleet with a new electric fleet run on rechargeable batteries.

Councillor Sykes represents Oldham Council on the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee (TfGMC).  On hearing the news he said:

“I am pleased that Volvo have indicated that they would like to start a trial of up of thirty new battery-powered buses in Manchester city centre in 2017, and that they would also like to back this with an investment in charging points.  I look forward to the day when these buses run in Oldham and they will help make a contribution to tackling the air quality issues we have.”

“The Liberal Democrats firmly believe that making our public transport system greener must be seen as a priority,” added Councillor Sykes.  “We need to move away from fuel-guzzling, carbon-emitting vehicles to clean, quiet electric vehicles.   We have already made progress with hybrid vehicles but this represents the next step. I look forward to the day when passengers can ride on any bus knowing that they have made a green choice for their journey.”
