Tour of Britain cycling race coming to Shaw and Crompton – Saturday 14 September 2019

The 2019 Tour of Britain Cycling Race is coming to Greater Manchester and, more importantly, to Shaw and Crompton.

This prestigious sporting event is watched by millions of people across the country each year and, we hope, will help to inspire the next generation of young sports people.

Given our rich sporting history – with scores of internationally recognised athletes hailing from the Borough – we hope that you too will support the occasion and welcome a major national sporting event coming to our community.

Below is some key information for people living on and around the route through Shaw and Crompton.

Please read it carefully if your household will be directly affected by parking restrictions between 10pm on Friday 13 September until 2pm on Saturday 14 September. The roads affected are listed below.

There will be a big build up to the race over the next few weeks in the media, on social media and online, with prizes to be won and a range of exciting ways to participate.

So, visit www.tourofbritain.co.uk via your internet browser for spectator and race information.

I hope you enjoy this fun and family-friendly event and look forward to this fantastic occasion coming to Shaw and Crompton.

Race information

The race takes place on Saturday 14 September. The peloton is expected to reach Oldham Borough at around 12.30pm – perfect for an afternoon out – and will take about half an hour to pass through.

Check out our map for full race route information and the race website www.tourofbritain.co.uk for full race details.

Road safety and road closures – how it will work

During the event, the safety of the riders, their support teams, residents and spectators will, of course, be of paramount importance. As a result, rolling road blocks will be in place during the race and certain sections of the route will need to be free of both driven and parked vehicles.

At these locations, yellow “no waiting at any time” cones – similar to those used.and will be deployed the night before the event. Vehicles that are still parked on the route prior to the race may be removed on instruction by the police and the owner will be liable for any recovery costs.

The roads affected in Shaw and Crompton are:

  • Buckstones Road B6197, Shaw – Both sides from a point 100 metres east of its junction with Grains Road Shaw to a point 100 metres east of its junction with Cliff Hill Road. At the south side from a point 100 metres east of and opposite its junction with Cliff Hill Road to its junction with George Street. At the north side from a point 60 metres east of its junction with Dingle Avenue to its junction with Milnrow Road A663.
  • Rochdale Road B6194, Shaw – Both sides from its junction with Rushcroft Road to its junction with Mossgate Road.
  • Rochdale Road B6194, Shaw – Southwest side from a point opposite its junction with Mossgate Road for a distance of 130 metres in a northwesterly direction

Car parking for residents

If you are affected by these road closures, you will need to find alternative parking the evening before the race. However, we would ask all residents to be thoughtful to others when doing so.

Where to watch

The beauty of this event is that you can watch from anywhere along the route. You might choose to watch it from your front window or front garden or simply from the roadside outside your home.

Community events

On the day there will be two community events happening, one at George Street Park and one at High Compton park. For more details, please contact rscdistrictteam@oldham.gov.uk 0161 770 1680.

Please can you tell me why, on the week before this prestigious sporting event passes through Shaw & Crompton, no posters/flyers have been made available to shops/businesses throughout our district to display and promote what is happening on the day?
I have passed a few official Tour of Britain posters to some shops as they and their customers knew nothing about the event. I thought local posters/flyers would have been distributed to them and all social media outlets by now, which would help to attract the local community and beyond to the ‘Race’ and the district’s associated events?

Could not agree with you more – but people in the Ivory Tower stopped listening to us local people and representatives a few weeks ago as they know best or rather the people running the marketing and communications for the council say they do. You are aware how long we have known about this and how long I have been banging on about it. Had loads of ideas and suggestions all binned including those I could fund. VERY disappointing and we could have made so much more. And to be fair some people have been really trying to get stuff done!

What time are they due down buckstones road
