Planned industrial action affecting First Manchester bus services in Shaw, Oldham, Rochdale and elsewhere Tuesday 24 May

firstbusconsult

Bus passengers are advised that planned industrial action could affect First Manchester services in some areas of Greater Manchester on Tuesday 24 May.

Discussions between First’s management and the union Unite are ongoing but if a resolution is not reached, services in Oldham, Salford, Rochdale and Middleton and parts of North Manchester will be affected.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) have worked with First and other operators to ensure that dedicated school services, which are supported by TfGM, are able to run as a matter of priority.

Those whose journey could be affected should check before travelling on Tuesday to find out the latest information.”

If industrial action goes ahead the free city centre Metroshuttle services will not run on Tuesday 24 May.

Information will be posted at bus stops in affected areas and additional staff will be on hand at key interchanges to advise passengers.

For a list of services affected please visit the news section at www.firstgroup.com/greater-manchester. Follow @FirstManchester and @OfficialTfGM on Twitter, or call First on 0161 627 2929  (7am to 7pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 5pm Saturday).

ASDA have withdrawn their application for 24/7 deliveries in Shaw

Copy of my recent letter to the people who have wrote to me about this and my original email of objection.  This is good news and hopefully an outbreak of common sense by ASDA.

Re: Planning application 337933 to allow 24/7 deliveries at ASDA, Shaw

Further to my recent letter of 13 April regarding the planning application to allow 24/7 deliveries as ASDA in Shaw, this is just a quick note to update you on progress.

I have now received confirmation that ASDA have withdrawn their application for 24/7 deliveries in Shaw.

This is fantastic news and I am more than happy with the outcome as I hope you are too.

If I can be of any assistance in the future, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Best wishes – Howard Sykes

Subject: Planning application 337933 ASDA in Shaw ref 2973

Dear Mr Leigh,

I formally wish the above application to be considered by the Planning Committee (upped) due to the fundamental nature of this most recent application and how it seeks to change the whole basis of how the store works and how it impacts upon its immediate neighbours (my constituents).

It seeks to allow deliveries via the front/customer entrance between the hours of 10pm and 6am i.e. through the night.

I have not objected to previous applications, all of which have relaxed the original conditions imposed on this development, in terms of delivery times and opening hours.

I now also formally object to what they propose now.

Since the development was conceived there has always been an entrance for the public/customer and a delivery entrance/yard.

Despite what local councillors wanted at the time the customer entrance was located on Greenfield Lane (a late change in the original application process).

The application this time means the customer entrance off Greenfield Lane actually gets used for commercial deliveries 24 hours a day, seven days a week including Bank Holidays.

The impact this will have on local residents will be massive – it terms of traffic, noise, light pollution and must be resisted.

I would be grateful if you would acknowledge receipt of this email.

Yours sincerely.

Councillor Howard Sykes MBE

Warm Welcome for Electric Buses

Volvo-Electric-Bus-Gothenburg

The Leader of the Opposition and of the Liberal Democrat Group on Oldham Council, Councillor Howard Sykes MBE, has welcomed the announcement earlier this week that officials from Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) have met with the Volvo Bus Corporation to discuss proposals to replace the current bus fleet with a new electric fleet run on rechargeable batteries.

Councillor Sykes represents Oldham Council on the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee (TfGMC).  On hearing the news he said:

“I am pleased that Volvo have indicated that they would like to start a trial of up of thirty new battery-powered buses in Manchester city centre in 2017, and that they would also like to back this with an investment in charging points.  I look forward to the day when these buses run in Oldham and they will help make a contribution to tackling the air quality issues we have.”

“The Liberal Democrats firmly believe that making our public transport system greener must be seen as a priority,” added Councillor Sykes.  “We need to move away from fuel-guzzling, carbon-emitting vehicles to clean, quiet electric vehicles.   We have already made progress with hybrid vehicles but this represents the next step. I look forward to the day when passengers can ride on any bus knowing that they have made a green choice for their journey.”

Disappearance of Royal Mail Post Box Hillside Avenue, Shaw, Oldham, OL2 8TW

royalmail

Sent a similar letter a couple of weeks ago about the box that is missing at the end of Longley Street/Oldham Road.  I am also aware the one at the entrance to Dunwood Park Courts has yet to be replaced.  This is clearly part of a wider problem if anybody knows of any other that have ‘disappeared’ in Shaw and Crompton please let me know.

Mr Mike Newnham, Chief Customer Officer, Royal Mail Plc, 100 Victoria Embankment, London, EC4Y 0HQ

Dear Mr Newnham,

Re: Disappearance of Royal Mail Post Box Hillside Avenue, Shaw, Oldham, OL2 8TW.

I have been contacted by a number of my concerned constituents that their local Royal Mail Post Box has disappeared/been removed without any notice.

The mail box in question was situated on the bus turnaround, Hillside Avenue, Shaw, Oldham.

This is the closest mail box for a considerable distance and the locality needed without suitable public transport options which many residents of this area of my Ward rely on to get around.

I would welcome a dialog and some information about this matter.

In the past I have supported Royal Mail proposals to small re-locations so that the Post Box is still available to local residents and also ‘works’ for Royal Mail.

Hopefully you will be in a position to replace the Post Box as soon as possible to alleviate the inconvenience and distress it is causing for my constituents.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely

Howard Sykes
