After a long campaign by local residents and your local Liberal Democrat Councillors Oldham Council has now made some suggestions to make this area safer.

See link for plan: Rochdale Road Fraser Street Shaw Safety Measures

Re: Proposed Raised Junction Plateau and Speed Cushions – Rochdale Road / Fraser Street / Chamber Road, Shaw

Additional traffic calming measures are proposed to be introduced on the B6194 Rochdale Road / Fraser Street / Chamber Road, Shaw.

The works seek to introduce road safety measures as a result of reoccurring collisions which have taken place in the vicinity within the last few years.

The attached plan shows the extent of the road safety measures, which include:

  • The introduction of raised junction plateau;
  • Introduction of speed cushions on Rochdale Road;
  • Refreshing existing road marking;
  • Proposed carriageway resurfacing including new ironwork;
  • Skid resistance coloured surface treatment;
  • Repositioning of selected street furniture in order to improve visibility

Should you have any queries about this scheme you can contact me either on the telephone number or by the email address below.

  1. Andrew Marsh says:

    Why don’t you install traffic lights?

  2. Carol Nuttall says:

    Why can you not just put a mini round about, like the ones at High Crompton Post Office and Rushcroft Road. It must be cheaper to the council tax payers and would solve the problem .

  3. joanne pepper says:

    It needs traffic lights, it has worked on Milnrow rd & at the top of blackshaw lane. Speed bumps only work with people who are already road conscious.

  4. Josie Kershaw says:

    No more speed bumps. The ones on Fraser St are in such bad repair with potholes and cars parked at the side of them, it’s ruining my car and I do not speed!

  5. Bernadette says:

    It would be helpful for the people of Shaw if you could get all the lorries that drive through our little village to somewhere more suitable !

  6. Joanne Nield says:

    Is a speed camera not an option?
    Also extra monitoring of vehicles on double yellow lines outside the shop on Fraser street, outside houses on Rochdale road and outside the church

  7. julianne wild says:

    needs to be a one way -so that the residents can park and no one is trying to squeeze through

  8. Peter Shipton says:

    The speed cushions are dangerous for cyclists and don’t slow cars down. Just ride a bike down broad lane to see how dangerous they are . Why not either slow the traffic to 20mph with proper speed bumps or just put up traffic lights.

    Alternatively you could make the top of frasier St and chamber Road one way. You could narrow the street and improve parking for local residents. Frasier Street can turn left or right only onto Rochdale Rd and the same for chamber Rd. With a one way system in this design would make the junction no longer a cross Road and reduce the crash risk by approximately 20%.

    Chamber Road is virtually a narrow Road due to close parking anyway.

  9. Pip says:

    Bollocks just put traffic lights there ????

  10. Jack Brayshaw says:

    The simplest way is to.introduce Traffic Lights.

  11. Jack Brayshaw says:

    Introduce Traffic Lights.

    This is well overdue

      Good Afternoon Councillor Sykes,

      Thank you for providing comments on additional improvements.

      The effectiveness of the safety measures will be monitored once the construction phase has been completed.

      The option to signalise the junction will be reviewed and kept in consideration as a long term solution, should a budget be identified.

      Kind Regards

      Support anything that will improve safety at this junction.

      I am also coming round to the view that the long term solution is to signalise the junction.
