Overnight weekend parking on the way for Shaw and Crompton Metrolink stop

Local Lib Dem Councillor Howard Sykes has welcomed the trial to allow overnight parking at selected Metrolink stops.  From the 4 December on Friday’s and Saturday’s people will be able to leave their cars and catch the tram, with free overnight parking at selected Metrolink stops.  These stops include: Shaw and Crompton, Derker, Oldham Mumps and Hollinwood.

“This is something I have asked for and championed for quite some time,” said Cllr Howard Sykes.  “A trial is the right approach to see how this impacts on other users.  The good news is that now if people are a little worse for wear when they get off the tram they can leave their car in the car park and pick it up in the morning without getting fined.”

The offer is part of a three month trial to see if overnight weekend parking at Metrolink stops could become permanent.

The trial is being introduced at bigger Metrolink car parks – with 30 or more spaces – to make sure daytime Metrolink customers can still find a space at smaller car parks.

It includes Brooklands (108), Stretford (33), Navigation Road (81), Bury (100), Crumpsall (43), Prestwich (36), Radcliffe (369), Whitefield (216), East Didsbury (302), Ladywell (250), Hollinwood (190), Oldham Mumps (270), Rochdale Rail Station (217), Derker (251) and Shaw and Crompton (90) stops.

Trams from Shaw and Crompton – Oldham – Manchester will now be every 6 minutes Monday – Saturday from 6 December

The new Manchester city centre Exchange Square tram stop is set to open on Sunday 6 December.

Services will initially run between Shaw and Crompton and Exchange Square via the brand new outbound Platform D, opening the same day at Victoria Station’s new-look Metrolink stop.  Inbound trams from Oldham will continue to use Victoria stop Platform A.

Combined with the Rochdale via Oldham line service, the new line means a six-minute daytime service between Shaw and Crompton, Oldham and the city centre from Monday to Saturday, with a less frequent service on Sundays.

There are more than 800 FREE car parking spaces combined at Shaw & Crompton, Derker, Oldham Mumps and Hollinwood stops, giving Metrolink customers the chance to park and ride into the heart of the city to enjoy all the Christmas fun on offer.
